Essential Fat Burning Supplements for Women

When it comes to losing fat, the two most important things are a proper workout and meal plan. If you’re not eating the right amount and types of foods and burning off more energy then you won’t make a dent in your fat loss goals. Now, if both your exercise and nutrition are on track, a proper supplement plan can help expedite your fat burning results by stimulating metabolism, increasing energy levels, reducing appetite and balancing hormone levels. Keep reading to find out what supplements you should look out for and why.      

Thermogenic Supplements

Why?

Thermogenic supplements help increase your body’s core body temperature or thermogenesis. Why is this important? It means your body is burning extra calories, even while at rest. This is accomplished by increasing the release and activity of a key fat burning hormone known as norepinephrine. This means fat burning can occur for an extended period of time.

What to Look For?

Sweet Red Pepper Extract:

Sweet red pepper extract is a non-pungent (non-spicy) cultivar of red pepper and contains three known capsaicinoid-like substances that can boost fat burning: capsiate, dihydrocapsiate and nordihydrocapsiate. Sweet red pepper extract can enhance core body temperature, oxygen consumption, uncoupling proteins 1 and 2 (UCP1 and UCP2) and even gene transcription of UCP2 mRNA in fat tissue.

Olive Leaf Extract:

It has been shown that Mediterranean diets rich in olive oil can be supportive for fat loss, improving body composition and resulting in greater fat loss versus diets that are lower in fat. Olive oil seems to have an effect on UCP or uncoupling protein. In animal studies, it has been shown that extracts of Olive Leaf cause an increase in UCP-1 activity in BAT (brown adipose tissue) and cause greater release of norepinephrine. Olive Leaf extract has also been shown to increase oxygen consumption indicating greater fat oxidation in obese animal models.    

Green Tea Extract

Green tea extract has a twofold effect when it comes to female fat burning. The active compound, EGCG, can help stimulate thermogenesis and norepinephrine release. Green tea extract can also help decrease the development of “bad” estrogen. High levels of estrogen can block fat burning in the body, but green tea’s positive effects can help lower estrogen load and elevate fat burning.

Energizing Fat-Burning Supplements:

Why?

Energy levels can fall when dieting, and energizing supplements can give you a boost, but that’s not all they can do. Energizing supplements can help increase the breakdown of fat via lipolysis, allowing for the availability of more energy during workouts and greater caloric burning. This also results in preservation of lean muscle tissue, as the body switches from burning protein or carbs to burning fat as fuel.

What to Look For?

L-Carnitine:

Carnitine is an amino acid that is non-stimulating, but can increase availability of energy in the body by moving fat from storage over to the powerhouse cells, the mitochondria, where the body can burn off that fat as energy. This can increase fat burning, while also enhancing energy levels particularly for intense, endurance type workouts like cardio sessions.

Caffeine:

You probably already know the benefits of caffeine for increasing energy levels, but caffeine actually has some fat burning effects too. Caffeine works synergistically with other fat burning ingredients including Green Tea. Caffeine blocks a key enzyme, cAMP, which is involved in degradation of norepinephrine, allowing it to stay active for longer. Not only do you get prolonged energy, you also get increased fat burning.

Estrogen Balancers

Why?

Estrogen is a key female hormone, and too much of this hormone can actually work to prevent fat burning. Why? When estrogen is in excess it binds to fat burning receptors blocking fat burning pathways from releasing fat for oxidation. By reducing excess estrogen, this can help open up fat burning receptors allowing them to be switched back on.  

What to Look For?

Indole-3-Carbinol

This super-antioxidant that is isolated from cruciferous vegetables like broccoli can effectively reduce excess estrogen metabolites by modulating estrogen metabolism and increasing liver detoxification enzymes to help neutralize harmful estrogen metabolites. Additionally, Indole-3-Carbinol has also been shown to have potential for reducing body weight and fat accumulation. Specifically, it has been shown to reduce pro-inflammatory adiocytokines in fat tissue, which can increase fat synthesis or production. In animal models, Indole-3-Carbinol decreased body weight and fat accumulation in fat tissue.

Calcium D-Glucarate

Calcium D-glucarate, found naturally in grapefruit, apples and broccoli, is a natural detoxifying agent that helps to eliminate toxic compounds, including highly estrogenic metabolites that can be harmful to the body. Calcium D-glucarate combines with estrogenic compounds in a process called glucuronidation, making them more soluble and more likely to be excreted from the body, preventing reabsorption back into the bloodstream.

Diindolylmethane (DIM)

Estrogen is broken down in the body into different metabolites. Each of these metabolites has different effects on the body. Some metabolites are low estrogenic and offer many benefits in the body, and some are highly estrogenic, which are not as favorable. Research studies show that supplementation with DIM works to increase the beneficial estrogenic metabolites and decrease the harmful estrogenic metabolites.
